Last day of winter 2009

Music often makes me feel something very special, I can even say that it creates my mood. This happens today, I had to leave to buy some food and took mp3 player with me with the last album of russian folk (rock ?) group called "Мельница" ("The mill" in English). Their melodic music, magic voice of their vocalist and probably this warm weather stopped me from going home and made me go behind the railway road to the forest, to be alone, to listen this music to feel everything near me -- mild wind, temperature that reminds coming spring, to see dying snow to remember something that gone away long ago.
Now I just want to share my feelings. my thounghts with you, allow you to see, what I saw, to know what I felt that moments.
I didnt have camera with me, just phone, which camera is not very good :)
These are the places where I used to walk with my dog, when she was alive (she's gone in 2002), this forest is the last home of all my pets who're waiting for me on the other side of Rainbow Brige. As for my dog.. She left long ago, but today I so wished her to be with me, I hardly stopped myself from calling her by name :) when I walking in this forest I feel like she's walking somewhere near me ... :)
I put into playlist only one song, but this song (I do not know why! There is nothing special in it's lyric, just mood) made me so unusually happy, that I was going between the fields with the feeling that noone exists in the world near me, just these paces and my memories :)

Games in Linux

Spent most part of today's evening playing game via local network. Despite the game was too fast and active for me (I'd actually prefer turn-based games, when if I beat someone, noone beats me in the same time :-D ) and my partner was much more experienced than me in this game and did'nt allow me to win (he-he, I'll surely will find the way to revenge him :), I get pleasure spending the time in a such way. I know, I'm among of these people who can spend hours and days playing computers games :( I know this, and I usually do not allow myself to be the addict of an computer game. Thanks for my using Linux as a desktop OS, there is not much tempt for this and not many really good Linux games exists.
Anyway, my top favourite are:

Stupid mistakes

Hello, my far friend :)
Do you remember, we talked of funny mistakes, like when adding firewall rules, we forget to add own IP, to be able to access the system, like running 'reboot' command in the wrong terminal window?
So today, I've made the funniest the most stupid mistake I've ever done :)
I was adding some functionality to our program, that besides other things should remove certain directories. The names of these directories were partly hardcoded into array (like /etc/, /usr/lib/ ...), the last part of the directory name should be added later in code (forming names like /etc/OurCompamyName,/usr/lib/OurCompanyName and like ). Very easy task. The code was written, the program compiled, checked -- everything is working as expected, no problem. Then, I've made small changes in the program logic, recompiled and run it once again. The program run and looked like it was finished ok. Then I mentioned that the system behaves in rather strange way - it doesnt accept new connections via ssh, some commands do not work and complain for libraries... Can you imagine my wonder, when I discovered that /etc/, /usr/lib and some other directories no longer exist! :)))
I've simply forgotten to add the lines of code that add the last and the most important part to the directory names, that should be recursively deleted, so instead of removing /etc/OutCompanyName, the software removed /etc/ ...
Tomorrow, I'll have to reinstall the OS ...
For my luck it was the test system :)

[Fedora10] KDE4.2 is out!

Congrats to everyone using Fedora10 &KDE!
FC has updated KDE just today, now we can enjoy 4.2 version.
I even noticed that a few my bugs were fixed, licq can now dock normally, hurray! That was really annoying bug for me.
konqueror doesn't fail browsing samba anymore, even more annoying bug :-)

Когда он появился у меня, я поняла -- Ландер вернулся. Именно так... _Они_ возвращаются, может немного другими, но с первого дня ведут себя как будто все окружающее пространство прекрасно знают, как будто тут уже были. Эриш первый крыс и единственный, кому позволено гулять по всей квартире, попрошайничать на кухне,переворачивать мусорное ведро, прыгать на колени, подлезать под руку, требуя ласки, - это зверь, для которого человек это все.
За это ему и позволено все, абсолютно все :)

Fedora 10 или "Пилите, Шура, пилите"(с).

Доставила она мне свою долю маленьких радостей :)
Фрустрируют некоторые особенности в ней, откровенно говоря. Удивило отсутствие xorg.conf по умолчанию, новый метод графической загрузки по началу напугал - сине-белая полоса внизу на черном фоне, я аж решила, что с графикой какие-то беды :) Нет, ничего, так и задумано:) в ставшем уже родным /etc/sysconfig/init отсутствует привычный "GRAPHICAL=", так что этот графический уж0c пришлось выключать убираением rhgb из параметров ядра.
xine при запуске радостно упал в кору. o_O Ну что-ж, бывает, не удалось ему подружиться с pulseaudio, благо, запуск xine'а с alsa проблему решает.
На xmms2 (точнее его графический фронтент) лучше даже не смотреть, работать-то оно работает, но выглядит уж больно страшно.
Несомненно порадовало наличие 64-битного флеш плагина для firefox. Работает, сразу, без каких-либо нареканий.
Окончательно убрали мой любимый kuickshow :( Замена нашлась -- после соответствующей настройки Gwenview начинает откликаться на привычные хоткеи.
kde4 уже на пути к состоянию, которое можно назвать "работает", периодчисески что-то падает, но так редко, что этого можно не замечать.
Огорчила samba, в консоле все монтируется отлично, файлы на удаленной шаре доступны, но ... если браузить удаленную машину в konqueror/dolphin, то нам мило сообщают, что smb <что-то там> died unexpectedly :)
Так что, по первым ощущениям, федоре 10 -- твердая тройка :)

This is not a software problem!

To start a brave fight with the NY loneliness, I've decided to upgrade my old FC7 to the most recent 10-th version today and as a experienced Linux user, my first step was to backup everything useful I have -- data, configuration files, that were written by myself to avoid re-reading tons of documentations once again. That's always the good idea to make a backup before SW changes :)
In brief, my setup is like the following: 2 HD (one 200 GB IDE, second 500 GB SATA) attached to internal controller handled by pata_amd and sata_nv driver each. IDE HD contains mainly Windows and some data, SATA -- Linux and much data (music, video and etc), so my goal was to backup two partitions on the SATA drive with / and /home, just in case I'd forget smth and need to retrieve old data.
To make things clear, I'm working for a software company that produces a proprietary software for backup, so I used our software to achieve my goal. Run backup and left for a while. When I came back, I've seen a nice picture: completely stuck system with blinking num lock. kernel panic, I guessed:) Rebooted, set proper printk level and start backup one more in a clean shell (w/o involving X-server), haha, that's what I've seen a while later:

tried to change sata port the drive is attached to, play with BIOS options, driver parameters with no success :) Reading this with dd produces the same problem. For my luck I have silicon 3114 controller on the m/b, but in tries to set RAID mode by default, that makes me think that it could erase data on the attached hard drive, which is completely not what I want...
I currently see several options:
One is to purchase one more HD (anyway I do not have enough space to store all the data) and attach it to Silicon controller, install Fedora10 on it, then put old SATA to the same controller.
The second is to look for some external storage (SATA, USB2 or FW), transfer all the data to this storage, replace nvidia controller with silicon and reinstall Fedora.

Доброе утро, страна! :)

В наступившим году жду уже два киноявления, одно -- новый Ice Age, теперь вот оказалось, что есть ещё один повод ждать лета. Это чудесный морской свин (точнее даже свиньи). Потрясающе нарисованные звери, настурально двигающие носиками (судя по трейлеру), правильных окрасов (камень в огород "голубого" дамбо из Рататуя), порадуют до глубины души любого, кто общался со свинками вживую.
Сюжет, судя по трейлеру, достаточно незатейлив, да и мульт ориентирован на публику более младшего возраста, нежели уже названый "Рататуй", но в этом ли дело? Главное -- звери, посмотреть на 3D морских свинок, пусть даже раскрывающих преступления -- удовольствие само по себе :)

Каникулы, матерь их!

Как и все люди люблю праздники, но ненавижу одиночество в такие дни. Обычная проблема структуирования времени. Что с ней делать в общем-то ясно, главная проблема -- заставить себя что-то с этим делать. Распинать старых (или не очень) друзей, откопать под слоем опилок (шутка) недочитаную книжку, открыть терминал, написать reboot и загрузить win дабы не потерять форму и быть способной ещё навалять кому-нибудь в "героях". В общем все то, на что обычно ненаходится времени даже при наличии желания, сейчас же проблема обратная, отсуствие этого самого желания при наличии времени. o_O
Длинные праздники это беспорно хорошо, но тяжко. За ежедневной рабочей суетой забываешь о себе и разногласиях с собой, нет времени настальгировать, сожалеть о том, что было когда-то (не/) сделано. Сейчас же, когда основным соблазном в жизни осталась банальная человеческая лень, которая может лишь приковывать тело к постели, а разум отправлять в прошлое, будя при этом накопившийся без должной разрядки негатив, открывается огромный простор для самокопания (а с моим везением, от этого самокопания страдаю главным образом не я, а мое ближайшее и единственно-дорогое окружение), начинаешь видеть в людях только плохое, причем не факт, что это плохое существет на деле ... не важно! - важно то, что оно (плохое в смысле) "существует" в моем воображении, становясь настолько реальным, что, не смотря на осозание причин собственного состояния, начинаешь в это верить.

Battlestar Galactica

4-th season is available in our local network. wow!
Truly speaking, almost a year ago, when I started to see the fist series of this film (thanks for you my dear far friend ;-) ), I didn't especially like it, but continued to watch it, as it was recommended by you :) series-by-series and I really loved this film, it was so interesting to wait till the end and find out how everything'd finish! Who're the all Cylons? In the end of the 3-rd season 11 of them were known. Do you remember that we tried to guess the last of the Cylons? :)
You supposed that it's General Adama, I thought that's president Lora.
4-th season is out and now it's time to see who or us was right or both were wrong? :-)
